about
What is In the Circle? Well, I’m still trying to figure this out. I recall the managing partner of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer’s Paris office once telling us that you need a plan in a team meeting for a case I was working on while I was an associate in the arbitration team a decade ago. I agree it’s generally a good idea to think things through before you act, but sometimes you need to make it up as you go along. After all, life doesn’t always go according to plan and can throw you some unexpected curve balls. In my case, it was a psychotic episode which occurred out of the blue at the age of 29 and an eventual diagnosis of schizophrenia several years later.
As mentioned in a previous post, In the Circle grew out of a gardening blog that I created back in 2017. Over time, I found myself touching on peripheral issues, such as setting up a gardening business and responding to a request for career advice which I received via Linkedin. My original blog, called Anita’s Garden, is now a sub-section of In the Circle. As discussed in an earlier post, I decided to develop a platform to share some of my experiences, ideas and insights into different aspects of life. Once I get an idea in my head, I can’t quite get rid of it, a bit like my recent fascination with ocean swimming, which is why I’m participating in a swim and run event next week. I think the idea came to me after noticing the popularity of reality television and advent of social media over the past decade. People are increasingly interested in fact rather than fiction. A lot of people enjoy living vicariously through others and want to know everything about other people’s lives, a bit like our nosy neighbours. Voyeurism can take extreme forms. Take my poor aunt and uncle who lives across the road from us for example. Their next-door-neighbour is a peeping tom, who continually peers through the cracks in their fence because she is so bored with her own life. Not that I hold it against any of my readers for following my blog as it unravels, because you’re not like her. I’m putting it all out there, so I can’t complain if people read it.
As I mentioned in an earlier post, one of my former colleagues wrote to me awhile ago, saying that she really liked my blog because she had never read anything quite like it before. I took this as a compliment as I highly value originality. I’m not quite sure where I’m going with this project, so we’ll have to see how things unfold over time. Contrary to popular belief, blogging is not outdated in my opinion. Nor can it be replaced by fleeting snippets on snapchat. There is always a place for detailed information, which is necessary to make informed decisions in life. It’s actually quite hard to maintain an interesting and active blog. Not many bloggers persevere long term. Blogging is challenging for several reasons. Firstly, the content has to be original, which entails a high level of creativity. Secondly, while posts appear relatively short, it takes quite a bit of time to draft them behind the scenes.
I don’t earn any income from writing posts, although I have been a brand ambassador for some leading gardening businesses in New Zealand in the past. Please note that I’m not keen on having advertisements on my website even if they generate revenue.
The best way to stay up to date with new posts on In the Circle is to like and follow my Facebook page, as I always post the link to new blogs as they are uploaded onto my website.
